Five mapped routes through raw Namakwa terrain — history, wildlife and panoramic views on a working Northern Cape farm.
About Botterkloof
Botterkloof Farm sits in the Namakwa district of the Northern Cape, a proper working farm carrying goats, sheep, cattle and donkeys across wide, open country. The land has genuine history written into it: dry-stone walls raised during the ostrich-farming era of the 1800s, the ruins of an old stone cottage and kraal, a dam sitting inside what is reported to be a meteor impact crater, and the Botterkloof Pass viewpoint where you can walk alongside the old rock wall for panoramic views at the top of the hill. In flower season, Namaqualand does what it does — the veld comes alive. Year-round, keep an eye open for eland, steenbokkies, baboons, porcupine, tortoise and a wide spread of birds including blue crane, secretary bird and various raptors. Cape leopard and lynx have been sighted on the property too. The farm has five mapped routes open to adventure bikes, quads, mountain bikes and hikers. All five are graded moderate (3 out of 5) and reward a slow, deliberate pace — the farmer sets a 20 km/h maximum and you will likely average closer to 10. That is not a complaint; it is the point. Rocky ground can cut tyres, so carry a can of tyre sealer and make sure your quad has enough fuel before you set off — there is no spare fuel on the farm. The routes range from just under 5 km to just over 10 km. Two are loops, one is a point-to-point crossing, one is a shorter adventure loop, and one adds a scenic circuit. Mix and match them across a single day or string them together for a fuller outing. Mountain bikers and hikers also have open day-access across the farm, with the farmer directing you from the homestead. There is no cell coverage on the property, so download your maps before you arrive. Bring your own drinking water, pack out every piece of litter (the farmer is firm on this — plastic bags kill livestock), and sign an indemnity form at the start. Secure parking for vehicles and trailers is available at the farmhouse. Wild camping is permitted in designated areas on the farm — ask the farmer on arrival where to pitch. No facilities are promised beyond the open land and a clear sky. It is a practical, quiet way to extend the day if you want to be back on the routes at first light.

Blue Route Loop
The Blue Route is a 7.88 km loop with 138 m of climbing, graded moderate at 3 out of 5. Open to adventure bikes, quads, mountain bikes and hikers, it carries an adventure character — expect terrain that keeps you engaged without tipping into technical. A good all-round route if you want something with a bit of variety inside a manageable distance.
Green Route Traverse
The Green Route is a point-to-point crossing of 4.82 km with 102 m of climbing, graded moderate at 3 out of 5. Open to adventure bikes, quads, mountain bikes and hikers, its crossing format means you start and finish at different points on the farm. It works well as a standalone or linked to one of the loops when you want to extend your time on the land.
Red Route Loop
The Red Route is the longest of the five routes at 9.73 km, run as a loop with 129 m of climbing. Graded moderate (3 out of 5), it is open to adventure bikes, quads, mountain bikes and hikers. The crossing character means you will move through different parts of the farm rather than staying in one pocket — good for getting a broad read of the land.
Yellow Route Loop
The Yellow Route is a 4.95 km loop with 84 m of climbing, the most accessible of the five in terms of distance. Graded moderate (3 out of 5) and open to adventure bikes, quads, mountain bikes and hikers, it suits those who want a shorter outing or need to save legs and fuel for other routes on the same day.
Purple Route Loop
The Purple Route is a loop covering 8.82 km with 222 m of total climbing, making it the most elevation-intensive option on the farm. Graded moderate at 3 out of 5, it suits adventure bikes, quads, mountain bikes and hikers. The character is scenic, and at a sensible pace you will have time to take it in properly. Allow enough margin in your day for the climb.
