Swartberg foothills base camp for the Central Karoo's best gravel country
About Koedoesbos
Koedoesbos sits at the foot of the Swartberg Mountains in the Prince Albert Valley, a short hop from Prince Albert — and right in the thick of some of the best adventure riding in the Western Cape. The farm runs its own rocky, scenic loop on the property, with Kudu and Eland roaming the land around you, and the Swartberg range as the backdrop. It is the kind of place you ride into after a big day on the passes, throw down your tent at one of two wild camp spots, and wake up ready to do it all again. The farm's on-property route is a compact but rewarding loop with rocky, technical terrain — rated moderate at grade 3 out of 5. The founder's suggestion is to save it for the late afternoon: do your big riding earlier in the day, then close things out with this scenic loop before making camp. The GPX file covers the main cleared but rocky route, plus additional explore lines. Explore 2 is an older, unmaintained option that adds a rock riverbed crossing before entering the valley loop — genuinely technical and exciting if you're up for it. Explores 3 and 4 follow lower contour lines but are not existing routes; you are welcome to investigate them, but must ride with at least one other person so assistance is on hand — a tip-over out there is likely. Beyond the farm boundary, Koedoesbos is exceptionally well placed for a multi-day adventure trip. Swartberg Pass — one of SA's great gravel passes — is a short ride away, with the Wall of Fire rock formation and Kobus se Gat on the road for good measure. Gamkaskloof (Die Hel), Seweweekspoort and Meiringspoort are all within reach for a full day's commitment. Montagu Pass and Outeniqua Pass anchor the southern leg if you're planning a bigger loop over the mountains toward George. Fuel in Prince Albert covers you before heading out; there are further fuel options in Oudtshoorn to the south and on the N1 to the north for range planning on longer days. Back in Prince Albert, Local Roots, Lazy Lizard, Watershed and the Prince Albert Café all do the job for coffee and food. You can stock up athe SPAR before heading back to camp. There are no ablutions at either wild camp spot on the farm, so come fully self-sufficient. Groups of up to ten per site.

The Koedoesbos Karoo Loop is intentionally positioned as the day's sign-off, not its centrepiece. The founder's steer is clear: get your big riding done first, then come back and run this compact, rocky circuit in the late afternoon before setting up camp. At grade 3 out of 5 it has real bite for its length — rocky, technical in character — but it is manageable on adventure bikes of all sizes and finishes at the farm, so camp is right there when you're done. The GPX covers several options beyond the main route, and they are a meaningfully different level of commitment. The main cleared but rocky line is the grade 3 loop. Explore 2 is an older, unmaintained line that adds a rock riverbed crossing before the valley loop. This is technically demanding, closer to grade 4 or 5 territory, and physically taxing; go in knowing it is rougher and less predictable than the main route, and set aside proper time for it. Explores 3 and 4 follow lower contour lines and are not existing routes at all — open ground that you are welcome to investigate, but you must ride them with at least one other person. A tip-over on these lines is a real possibility and you will need someone on hand to assist. Prefer to take it slower? On foot or on a mountain bike the loop stops being about the technical line and becomes about the country itself — raw, rocky Karoo veld running out under a vast, empty sky, still and silent the way only the deep Karoo is. This is wild game country: kudu — the koedoe the farm takes its name from — along with eland and other buck move through the bush, so go quietly and you stand a good chance of seeing them.
After you book, you get a GPX of the exact route — follow it in your own nav app. No turn-by-turn.
